Dear Revere Parents,
Please read the attached email from Steve Zimmer, our School Board Member. We encourage you to review his recommendation and act as you see fit.

Polly, Lori, Katy and Allison

Friends,
LAUSD students and families desperately need your help over the next few days. As you know, everyone in the LAUSD family has done everything possible to address our $640 million budget deficit. Now it looks like there might be some light at the end of this tunnel--but only with your help. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) has introduced Senate Bill, SB 3206, the Keep Our Educators Working Act. It would provide $23 billion to save public education jobs nationally. That would mean approximately $225 million for LAUSD. This funding will save as many as 3,000 teacher, counselor, administrator and classified jobs over the next two years. Recently the bill has gained some momentum: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid signed on as a co-sponsor to Harkin’s legislation and the Obama Administration endorsed the measure and sent out a letter of support to all members of Congress.
But that’s not enough. Senator Reid has agreed to have the bill introduced as an amendment on the Senate floor this week. But there may not be the votes to pass it. Even California's own Diane Feinstein hasn't come out in support of our schools. On the House side, Appropriations Chair David Obey said he will put the $23 billion into the House bill IF he thinks there is enough support to pass it on the House floor. He fears the anti-federal spending voices in many home districts are intimidating members of Congress and will turn them against it. So it’s time to crank up the volume on our side. Congressman Obey has delayed marking up the education funding bill until Monday, May 24th --six days from today.

So I am asking you to pick up the phone, rev up your blackberries, dust off your fax machines and let Washington know that Los Angeles believes our schools are vital to our nation's economic survival. Last year Congress told us banks were too big to fail. This year we need to tell them our kids are too important for Congress to fail us. So today, tomorrow and Thursday I need you to call, write, email and fax Senator Feinstein and tell her we need her support on the SB 3206. Starting on Friday, call, write, email and fax the California members of the Appropriations Committee urging their support for $23 billion fund for education jobs. They all need to hear from us.

This is a huge opportunity. I have been traveling to Washington since November to encourage federal funding to fill in part of the $640 million gap in LAUSD’s budget. All the experts said it was hopeless, despite Senator Harkin’s leadership on the issue. But now it looks like our kids have a fighting chance. Between the sacrifices made by our teachers and administrators and this action in Washington, we actually have a chance to avoid massive layoffs, to restore class size and keep our LAUSD family whole. But we have to act now. Your voices can make a difference. Tell Congress to stand for education.

        Capitol switchboard number is 202-393-3121.
Dianne Feinstein’s number is 202-224-3841, fax is 202-228-3954, email isfeinstein at feinstein.senate.gov

        Let’s light it up!

In Unity,

Steve
