History
The Zoo Magnet Center was established in 1981 on the North Hollywood campus. In it's third year the magnet moved to its present site adjacent to the L. A. Zoo in Griffith Park. The Curriculum focuses on animal studies and biological sciences. Transportation between sites is provided by shuttle bus.
Students must apply to attend the magnet school by sending the application found in the Choices brochure, which is due by mid-December of the prior calendar year the student plans to enter the magnet school. Students who live more than two miles from the school are entitled to bus transportation. Late buses are provided for students who participate in extracurricular activities or tutoring.
Magnet students have many opportunities to be involved in research experiences. Students regularly
participate in Earth Watch expeditions, the CITES project (Convention on International Trade for Endangered Species), Field work in Griffith Park,
and research in the zoo. Students also serve internships and perform community service at the zoo, the Gene Autry Museum and the Natural History Museum.
